Migraine Patient Became a Doctor and Found a Cure for Migraine
Neurologist Dr. Emel Gokmen, who had hard times because of childhood migraine, told her story and suggested solutions in her book “Migraine Solutions”.
Today, there are various treatments for migraine pain which makes individuals unable to work and cause severe headaches. And neurologist Dr. Emel Gokmen, who had migraine attacks since her childhood, told her struggles and solutions in her own book “Migraine Solutions!” “I lived my own migraine again and again with each patient and felt suffocated with their ongoing pain. So be it. At the end we got better and happier together… Now I know that my long lasting struggle for curing migraine is based on the ‘fellowship of sufferers’. Although 1 out of 10 people suffer from migraine, if it happens just occasionally and can be handled by taking drugs, people tend to not take it seriously. However, if it becomes an everyday thing and does not respond to any medications, migraine makes your life unbearable. You get tired of it and begin feeling desperate.”
Gokmen, highlighting that she wrote this book to show desperate patients that migraine and headaches are treatable, declared that for the last decade she combined conventional and integrative medicine to find a cure for migraine. Explaining that these diseases are described with the help of stories, Gokmen said: “This way, I was able to show all kinds of migraine and headaches and what is more, I showed that migraine is not just a headache. Each story contains different characteristics, reasons and solutions.”
Emel Gokmen also said that not only everyone can find a story to relate themselves but also can have a better understanding of other migraineurs. “Each story is a new window. Sometimes, readers can find peace by seeing that there are worse cases than them. Also, they can see positive sides of it.”
Dr. Gokmen, calls this treatment algorithm, which is the result of a study period of 10 years, “Gokmen Approach”. She finds the reasons of migraine and states that the source is the body, not the brain. Gokmen also said that although this book is for patients, it is also a good source for academicians, clinicians and dentists.
