Headaches in Children

HEADACHES IN CHILDREN

Migraine may show itself in children not with the headache but with nausea, vomiting and stomachache.

Complaints Begin in School Ages

Complaints, usually occurring in school ages, disappear in the weekends and holidays. That makes parents think that it is a lie for not going to school.

DO NOT THINK THAT IT DOES NOT HAPPEN TO CHILDREN!

If your child gets car sick, he or she might have migraine

Migraineur mothers usually tend to ignore this condition comparing the mild attacks of their children to their own severe pain. It is reported that children have headaches more than it is thought. Dr. Emel Gokmen, explaining that migraine does not appear with its regular symptoms in children, said “Usually the headaches are not severe in children or even, they might not exist at all. This causes the mothers, especially if they also have migraine, to not take it seriously and think that their child is just imitating them. Since children cannot describe the pain properly, mothers should be very careful.”

It is not an excuse for not going to school

Dr. Gokmen, highlighting that some symptoms are to be monitored in children for detecting migraine, says “Migraine may show itself in children without the headache but with nausea, vomiting and stomachache. These kids are usually calm, quiet and successful at the school. It is also common amongst them to have migraineur moms and car sickness. As it is among adults, headaches might be triggered with light, noise and smell. Being overly active; I mean playing computer games, running and sweating and staying under the sun for too long might trigger migraine. Also the means of living of the family, problems at school or at home and the conditions of the family affect the frequency.”

It is confused with sinusitis

Dr. Emel Gokmen highlighted the fact that migraine might be confused with sinusitis in preschool and primary school years and told it is a waste of time trying to treat sinusitis. “True diagnosis will increase the success in the school and eliminate unnecessary drug use.” Dr. Gokmen also stated that migraine in children usually begins with the school. “Complaints are less in the weekends or the summer but it might very well be the contrary. Headache in children is not an excuse for not going school. Kids usually do not use headaches like this.”
